Pigmentation or discolouration of skin often happens with many middle aged women. More often than not women feel less confident with these marks and thus, go in for expensive cosmetic treatments at clinics. However, these marks may easily lighten or even disappear with some herbal treatments.
Pigmentation mostly affects the face, specifically the T-Zone. But other than that, arms, back and shoulders too may experience darkening of skin.
Causes of pigmentation –
It happens mainly due to hormonal changes, excessive exposure to sun, stress, allergies, cortical or endocrine dysfunctions, acne and pimples as well. Often women taking some medication may also find dark patches appearing on the skin. Pregnancy too leads to dark skin spots, especially on the face.
Once the cause of pigmentation is identified it gets easier to deal with it. Prolonged and severe pigmentation needs to be shown to a doctor as dark spots which are a more than a year old are relatively difficult to eradicate without medication.
However, there are some herbal and natural remedies which prove to be quite useful in curing dark spots.
These are:
These are:
• Water - is the foremost thing of importance when it comes to skin care. Atleast eight to ten glasses of water every day are a must for blemish free skin.
• Milk - alone acts as a de-pigmentation element. Apply unboiled milk on your skin for 10 minutes and then wash it off. It softens and lightens the affected area after continuous use.
• Sugar - granules mixed into your daily cream, when rubbed gently on the spots, help lighten them. Once the sugar is absorbed by the skin, it should be washed off with warm water first and then a cold splash. Use atleast once a week.
• Papaya - too is great for blemishes. ½ cup of papaya paste and ½ cup of fuller’s earth mixed together, form a good face pack. Apply for 20 minutes and then wash away with cold water.
• Almond paste – made coarsely and mixed with 2 tablespoons of honey works as a scrub. Massage it on the blemished area for 10 minutes and then rinse it away with cold water.
• Carrot and fuller’s earth - with a few lemon drops too make a good face pack for skins with pigmentation. You can keep it on for 20 minutes and then wash away with cold water. Repeat every week for best results.
• Butter milk - is a great substitute for chemical bleach.
• Cucumber juice - mixed with rose water, malt and vinegar in equal parts also serve as a face pack for dark spots.
Some dietary changes –
• If you are suffering from pigmentation it is a wise decision to include foods rich in Vit –A, (carrots, apples, etc), Vit-C (citrus fruits and vegetables), Iron and calcium in your diet.
• Vit-B complex supplements too should be included after consultation with the doctor.
Some lifestyle changes –
• Keep your mind free of stress and tension. Meditation and yoga are said to do your skin good as they increase the blood circulation.
• Oral birth control pills and sleeping pills both might bring about some hormonal changes; it is therefore good to drop them.
• A sun-screen is a must before going out.
• Do not use too much makeup as it might end up worsening the pigmented parts of skin.
• Also avoid skin colouring agents and dyes.
• Smoking too should be eliminated from your routine.
• Avoid touching and peeling the pigmented skin with your hands, this may deteriorate the condition.
With a little effort from your side and inclusion of some of the above mentioned herbal remedies in your skin care regime, you’ll find the dark spots reducing considerably.
