Herbal and natural treatments for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) By Ishpreet Bindra
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an inflammation of the organs of the pelvic region, found exclusively in women. Also known as salpingitis, it usually is seen to affect the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The disease finds a good cure in herbal supplements and medicines as they are not only mild but also have minimum side effects, even when used for long periods.

The Pelvic Inflammatory Disease many a times has symptoms which can not be easily associated with the problem. Therefore, it is often at a much later stage that the problem is identified. By that time usually the scarring of the abdominal tissue has already begun and the patient also suffers from PID induced infertility.

Some of the common symptoms which indicate a PID are –

Irregular menstrual cycle
Intermittent spotting
Vaginal discharge
A vague, mild pain in the lower abdomen under normal circumstances
Excruciating pain during intercourse
Altered body posture due to pain in pelvic region
Fever vomiting and nausea are some of the extreme case symptoms
Foul smelling vaginal discharge
Prolonged infection leads to infertility

Many factors lead to the development of infection in the pelvic region. Some of these are –

The most common reason for a PID is bacteria, which may enter the body during intercourse due to Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD).
Staphylococcus bacterium and E.Coli are some other bacteria which might enter the pelvic region via the cervix during the use of some intra-uterine device (IUD) or an intra uterine contraceptive and trigger the infection.
Bacterial infections via the cervix are also possible during childbirth.
Usually antibiotics are used to cure PID. However, they are strong and can not be taken for long periods if need be. Also many people tend to have stomach pain and indigestion b due to antibiotics. Therefore, herbal cures are the best to be used for the problem.
Herbal practitioners generally suggest the use of herbs and foods rich in VIT-C, zinc, Vit-A and Bioflavonoids. These not only cure the inflammation, they also strengthen the immune system and repair the damaged organs faster. These compounds also have properties to strengthen the reproductive system and cure the symptoms of infertility in women caused by PID.

Following are some of the time tested herbal remedies for PID –

Red raspberry leaf – can be used to make herbal tea. It is a rich source of Vit–C and Bioflavonoids and fights inflammation and infection. This tea also helps improve bowel health.
Ginger, goldenseal herb, fennel, cayenne, barberry bark, cascara sagrada etc are some other herbs which can be used in the herbal tea. All these mixed together form the tea mixture. Which can then be boiled, strained and had three times a day initially to once or twice a week eventually. Use only a teaspoon at a time.
Red clover blossoms, peach tree bark, poke root, licorice, chaparral, Oregon grape root, prickly ash bark, root of burdock and bark of buckthorn are some of the ingredients used to prepare the mixture that detoxifies and purifies the blood after an infection/ inflammation.
Herbs like – mullein, comfrey, bark of oak and walnut trees and the roots of yellow dock and marsh mallow herb; all prove useful to cure vaginal infection.

Massage of the pelvic region with castor oil is also said to be very effective in easing away the pain. Practitioners also suggest a regular exercise of the pelvic muscles as well as the vaginal muscles. Women are suggested to tighten and loosen their vaginal muscles, internally, as a form of exercise. This shall increase blood flow to the damaged tissue and help heal them better.

Persistent use of herbal medications helps to restore the strength and immunity of the weakened pelvic region. The body once detoxified, builds back its lost immunity and the organs heal faster.
