Large skin pores: Natural remedies to treat them By Ishpreet Bindra
Our skin is the largest organ of our body. Composed of tiny invisible pores, the skin helps our body to eliminate excessive toxins, oil and other body wastes from these pores. However, often these pores get enlarged and do not look nice especially on the face. Some natural cosmetic tips prove very good in dealing with the problem of open pores.

Causes of enlarged skin pores –

To avoid pores of the skin from enlarging it is important to know what causes this problem in the first place. Our skin is busy secreting excretions all round the clock. Be it sweat, sebum, oil, toxins or uric acid, all these come out of the pores on our skin. As a result, often the pores get enlarged due to –
Heavy skin secretions – over secreting pores are forced to stretch and as a result they become large.
Pore blockage resulting in swelling and later bursting of the pores.
Excessive oiliness, pimples and acne.
Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy or menopause; causing pimples.

Natural pore care tips –

Always remember good skin care is the foremost thing of importance, to be done on a regular basis, to combat this problem. Here are some natural ways to keep your skin and pores, happy and toxin free.

Water is the best solution to all skin problems. Drink lots of water, at least 3-4 litres of it every day. This helps flushing out body waste and toxins. The skin has little left to excrete through pores. Therefore, they stay tight.
A paste of yogurt and powdered almonds is a good skin tightener. Apply it on your face for 15 minutes and then wash off. To be followed once every week.
Egg whites are unmatched when it comes to tightening pores. When beaten well with a paste of peeled cucumber, they work as a very good face pack for large pores. Apply for 15 minutes and wash with cold water. Use this twice every week for best results.
Rub some raw tomatoes on your face while you work in the kitchen and wash away after 10 minutes. This is an easy, effortless remedy.
Milk and water mixed with vinegar too can be applied on the face for tightening pores.
Face packs with white clay as one of their ingredients too work very well. A mixture of white clay, lemon juice, mint paste and 2 tablespoons of brandy applied on the face for 20 minutes, leaves skin shining and tight. Another pack can be made with white clay, camphor powder, a tea spoon of honey and a little brandy. This can be used daily.
Cucumber juice mixed with rose water is a very good astringent for oily skin. Store it in the refrigerator to use every day.

Some other things of importance –

Do not keep picking at your pimples and acne, let them heal naturally, this shall avoid the rupturing of the skin and keep the pores from enlarging.
Use of cosmetics should be minimal. Preferably use oil-free cleansers, face washes and moisturisers for your skin.
Cleanse the make-up away at night before sleeping, this allows the skin to breathe through open pores.
Wash your face atleast three times a day, to keep the dust, grime and pollutants from clogging the pores.
It is also vital to understand that our skin mirrors what we eat. Oily, spicy and junk foods produce lot of sebaceous waste in the body, which is taxing for the skin to eliminate. It is therefore, wise to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and water rich foods. Fibre is easy to digest and does not cause oily skin secretions.
Lifestyle changes like – yoga and meditation, some evening walks and light exercising like swimming too help enhance the blood circulation.

A regular herbal skin care regime with healthy lifestyle changes will not only tighten your skin pores but will also give you that unmistakable glow. So go ahead and try it out, it works!
