Natural remedies and tips to avoid morning sickness during pregnancy
In pregnant women, feeling of nausea and vomiting is quite common. This is termed as morning sickness. Usually, this heaviness is felt in the morning, as the blood sugar level is low at that time. However, it should not be taken that this morning sickness occurs only in the morning, you can feel it any time during the day.
Not every woman suffers from morning sickness. If you look at the statistics, you would know that nearly 50-60% pregnant women suffer from morning sickness. It generally begins from the first week of pregnancy and can continue up to the sixteenth week.
Causes
The chief cause of morning sickness is the hormonal and chemical changes that occur within the body during pregnancy. This is felt more during the first pregnancy as your body is yet learning to tackle with the changes occurring in the body. Lack of good diet may also cause morning sickness. Exposure to strong odors may also result in morning sickness in some women. Indigestion is also a vital cause leading to morning sickness.
Natural Remedies for Morning Sickness
Here are some of the common remedies to cure morning sickness:
• Ginger is one of the best remedies for morning sickness. Taken in any form (i.e., paste, ale, tea, etc.), it gives immediate relief.
• Lemon is very beneficial for treatment of morning sickness. Women feeling the symptoms of nausea and vomiting could cure morning sickness by just sniffing at the lemon juice or the peel of a lemon.
• Mints, such as spearmint, horsemint and peppermint are all very effective in curing morning sickness. Their fragrances and flavors can lessen the feeling of nausea and vomiting.
• Eating small meals at frequent intervals rather than having just two big meals keeps the digestive system working continuously.
• Avoid spicy foods as they are tough to digest. They will not only cause morning sickness but will also increase the body heat. This is dangerous for the life of the fetus and may lead to abortion.
• Deficiency of Vitamin B is a direct cause of morning sickness. Sufficient quantity of Vitamin B in the body must be reloaded at frequent intervals. Vitamin B diet includes salads, wheat, vegetables, bananas, sea-food, chicken, etc.
• Take two oranges in the morning and two in the evening. This will keep you healthy during pregnancy. It contains Vitamin C, which is beneficial during pregnancy.
• Add two spoonfuls of the bael juice in cooked rice. Take it at least two times a day. This will reduce the effect of morning sickness to a great extent.
• Extract juice from some curry leaves. Add the juice of one lemon in it. Add a spoonful of honey to this mixture. Drink this mixture at least 3-4 times a day to cure morning sickness.
• Prepare a mixture with some lemon juice and mint juice in it. Take it 3-4 times a day. This is very effective in curing morning sickness.
• Prepare tea with spearmint to cure morning sickness. Peppermint is equally effective. Chewing gums that contain ginger, spearmint or peppermint also control morning sickness.
• Eat some dry crackers or biscuits when you wake up in the morning. Have ginger or mint tea with them to have greater effect.
• Do not eat and drink at the same time, that is, drink fluids in-between meals, instead of drinking them during meals. It helps to avoid heaviness in the stomach, thus reducing morning sickness.
• Some of the odors may arouse the feeling of nausea. Try to identify them and avoid them as much as possible.
• Go for a regular morning and evening walk.
• Eat potato chips to cure nausea. This is the only time in a woman’s life when these chips work as a cure.
• High-protein foods like nuts, peanut butter and dairy products help in reducing morning sickness.
• It is very essential to have a good amount of fluid during pregnancy. Eat fruits like melons, carrots, celery, grapes, apples and pears to increase the level of fluid in your body.
