Tiredness is a common symptom among pregnant women. This is because the development and growth of baby inside a pregnant woman involve a lot of hard work from your body. Pregnant women often feel too tired, weary or even exhausted at times. This is more common in the first trimester as the body has to deal with rapidly changing hormone levels. This tiredness may decrease during the second trimester.
As the delivery date comes nearer, this tiredness and fatigue will become more noticeable as your increased weight puts extra strain on your body. Along with this factor, the pregnancy symptoms, such as baby movements and emotional upheaval make you even more restless and it becomes tough for you to have a sound sleep at night.
Other factors that may cause excess fatigue include expecting twins, several pregnancies in quick succession and complications in pregnancy, such as anaemia.
Tiredness during pregnancy can be cured through a lot of natural remedies.
Some of the common ones among them include the following:
• Eat a well-nourished diet like plenty of fresh food, fruits, vegetables and protein with each meal. This will provide essential nutrients to your body that are required by you as well as the baby developing within you.
• Drink a good amount of water so as to prevent dehydration that would make you even more tired.
• Maintain a constant level of blood sugar in your body so as to avoid hypoglycemia (also called low blood sugar) that can make you feel exhausted. Walking and regular exercise will help you in maintaining the blood sugar level.
• Make a habit of eating small meals at frequent intervals. Avoid skipping any meal especially breakfast. Try to carry a snack with you to be consumed in case you feel fatigue at any time.
• Eat foods that are rich in iron in order to prevent anaemia. Foods like red meat, dark green vegetables, blackcurrants and dried apricots are good sources of iron.
• Take a lot of rest to avoid being exhausted.
• Go for a daily morning walk in fresh air for at 15-20 minutes. This will make you feel fresh and energetic throughout the day.
• Try to have a relaxing exercise such as yoga or a walk in the garden in daytime.
• Have a relaxed bath by adding up to three drops of aromatherapy essential oils such as lavender, grapefruit or bergamot. This will calm your senses and make you feel fresh.
• A lot of therapies are also effective in reducing tiredness during pregnancy. Therapies like massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and shiatsu are good for a pregnant lady. Keep in mind that these therapies should be performed under the guidance of a professional therapist.
• Avoid fried and spicy food as the smell and taste of such foods will increase the feeling of sickness and tiredness in a pregnant woman.
• Here are some fruits that may help you to get relieved from tiredness.
• Lemon: It has the ability to decrease the sickness feeling within minutes. It will give you an immediate relief.
• Apples: Eat a cold apple everyday to decrease the level of fatigue.
• Prefer drinking non-caffeinated teas. Peppermint and ginger will be too good for a pregnant woman.
• Wear ‘acupressure’ wrist bands as they help to prevent fatigue during pregnancy.
• Drink buttermilk every day.
• Consume whole grain foods and avoid processed foods.
• Drink coconut water and diluted ginger water every day.
• Massage your forehead with lavender oil.
Note: Avoid resorting to any of the above remedies in case you are allergic to them. Consult your doctor in such a case.
