Want fuller, beautiful lips? Here are some simple homely tips By Megha Batra

Lips are the most sensitive area of our face during wind, cold weather and sun. Lips look dull and lifeless and their softness is lost if their care is not taken properly. Also, during the coldest months of the year, skin dries quickly and leaves the lips scaly, itchy, and uncomfortable. In order to avoid such a condition of lips, it is suggested to keep the lips soft and moist to make them attractive and crack-free.

There is a misconception among some people that applying lipstick on dried lips would make lips shiny and soft. But the fact is that it makes the lips even more dull and rough.

Apart from medication, a lot of herbal and homemade tips could be of great help to take care of lips with no side effects. These tips help in making the lips softer and smoother than ever before. Some of the best tips among them are suggested hereunder:

•    Rub your lips with a soft toothbrush daily. Do not overdo scrubbing. This would peel off the rough layer of skin on your lips.
•    Apply honey daily on your lips. This natural treatment would make your lips very smooth and soft.
•    Apply olive oil on your lips on a regular basis before taking a bath. Wait for few minutes till it is absorbed and then wash your lips.
•    Apply clove oil on your lips with a cotton bud. Wait for few minutes and then remove it with a dry cloth. Your lips would become pink and smooth. This recipe works in an effective manner even in the worst condition of lips.
•    Use a lip balm that has sun protection factor of SPF 15 and more. Always prefer branded lip balms which would make your lips soft.
•    Using Vaseline petroleum jelly is a good option for soft and smooth lips. It also removes the cracks on your lips. Always wash your lips before applying a coat of Vaseline at night. During the day, apply a coat of Vaseline as a base and then apply your desired brand of lipstick.
•    Bees wax is a very good option for chapped and cracked lips. It helps in locking the natural moisture of lips in all seasons.
•    Drinking a lot of water during the day would moisturize your lips and make them soft. It is necessary because the moisture of your lips depends on the saliva in your mouth. Thus, in case of dehydration, your mouth will become dry, eventually hurting your lips.
•    Always keep in mind that whatever you apply on your lips is being eaten by you. Always prefer a good brand lipstick or lip gloss.
•    Eat sufficient quantity of fruits as they contain a substantial amount of moisture. This moisture will hydrate your lips and make them soft.
•    Prefer to make the lip balm yourself by using virgin coconut oil. Get the kind of coconut oil that has not been bleached, refined or processed. Put it in a little jar and carry it wherever you go. There is no harm done even if you swallow or lick it from your lips.
•    Massage your lips with ghee (clarified butter). It is a natural protection for lips.
•    Apply herbal moisturizing lotion on lips regularly.
•    Dip a black tea bag in warm water. Rub the tea bag with pressure on your lips for five minutes. This helps in increasing the moisture level of your lips.
•    Avoid licking your lips too often.
•    Remove lipstick from your lips before sleeping at night with a herbal cleanser and then apply a thin layer of ghee on your lips.
•    Massage your lips with finger tips in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. It improves circulation of blood and removes dead skin from the lips.
•    Apply fresh beetroot juice on your lips every night before going to bed. It is an effective remedy for dark lips.
•    Avoid too much intake of caffeine and smoking as it causes dehydration and darkens the skin on your lips and makes them look dull.

Regular exfoliation of lips and moisturizing them is the best tip for soft shiny lips.

Note: Avoid resorting to any of the above tips in case you are allergic to them. Consult a skin specialist or dermatologist in such a case.
