BASIC PRINCIPLE OF AROMATHERAPY
‘Concepts of aromatherapy’
- The basic principles of aromatherapy lie in the concept of ten senses in Ayurveda. Ayurveda believes there are panchindriya five senses. “Panch Karmendriya” five senses of action and “Panch Gyanendriya” five senses of feel/knowledge.
The concept says aromatherapy functions through our sense of smell (one of the Gyanendriya) and this sense of smell connects to the area of brain that deals with emotion and storage of long term memories (Adhisthan of Gyanendriya) and Nose or olfactory system is the Karmendriya behind.
Science reveals that humans can distinguish 10,000 different smells.
It is also evident that some plants of medicinal properties like some aromatic herbs are used in tea as medicinal herbs. The best examples are tulsi, black pepper, mint.
