Garlic: Effective cancer controlling household herb By Dr. HN Pandey, B.Sc. MD (Ay), Professor, Aligarh Ayurvedic Medical College
Herbal way is the best way for health preservation, prevention and treatment of diseases. Herbal medicines are easily available everywhere and shows no side effects on body. Besides, they control diseases permanently.

Today I would like to discuss the medicinal properties of garlic especially in the aspect of cancer control. Garlic (Allium sativum), which is known as lahsun in Hindi and rasona in Sanskrit is a common herb found everywhere is used as a cooking herb all over the world. But it is being used a herbal medicine from times immemorial. In India, garlic has been used in form of medicine for the Vedic times (around 5,000 years back). Garlic is most produced in the Arabia, Asia and European countries.

Properties of garlic:

Garlic is a unique herb that has 5 of the 6 tastes – sweet, sour, bitter, hot and dry, with the exception of salt. It has four major herbal properties, i.e., oily, light, active and digestive. After digestion the active essence of garlic is present in bitter form (katu bipaka).
Garlic controls three active herbal doshas. It controls vata and pitta and has an effect on kapha making garlic a very potent herbal medicine.

Action on diseases: Garlic is used as a herbal medicine for the treatment of arthritis, sciatica, asthma, dysponea, diarrhea, skin spots, paralysis, tumour and cardio-vascular ailments.

How garlic helps prevent and fight cancer

Garlic extract has a compound called taxsol that fights against tumour and necrosis factors by destroying the cancerous cells. This has been established through the research by IIT Chennai’s biotechnology departments HOD Dr D Karunakaran.

Taxsol is a compound that shows some poisonous effects on body. Therefore, limited doses of the same are required for cancer treatment as higher doses may harm the body. The presence of taxsol in garlic is just about the perfect amount needed to be administered in the body for cancer treatment. According to Dr Karunakaran, garlic has more than 33 organo-sulphur compounds which are highly effective in treatment of cancer. These compounds easily destroy cancerous cells and controls cancer in human body if limited doses are administered in a regular form.

Herbal description in cancer control and the role of garlic

Herbal medicine describes cancer as tridoshaj tumour and garlic is an effective controller of tridosha. Therefore, it is very effective against cancer. Cancer cells are unnatural growth of tissues and garlic effect checks the growth of these tissues because garlic blocks the nutrition, circulation and metabolism of these tissues thus killing them. Herbal vata is responsible for circulation, herbal pitta is responsible for metabolism and herbal kapha is responsible for its nutrition, and all three are controlled by regular use of garlic thus controlling cancer.

Garlic is a wonder herb. It is easily and cheaply available. There are limitless medicinal possibilities of garlic. More research in garlic will surely establish scientifically the curative and preventive properties of garlic that mankind has known for thousands of years. Since, India is the cradle of traditional medicines, Ayurveda being the gift of India to the world, the government should encourage departments like AYUSH and other independent biotechnology researchers to work more towards finding the reasons behind the wonders of garlic for the betterment of universal human health.
