Human health is the base of human life that controls all his activities. If you are bestowed with good health, it reflects in your good behavior. However, if you are suffering from ailments, no matter however hard you may try, you cannot always present good behavior.

In these modern times, it is imperative that all people have knowledge of this subject. Sadly, ignorance in this subject is leading man to stress, strain, diseases, including a plethora of physical and mental dissociations. Due to this very reason, negative things like universal crime, violence, suicides, exploitation are on the rise.

If only man can improve his health that will effect a change in his behavior he can pass easy and peaceful life thus, making the world around him pleasant. By good behavior hell can be turned into heaven, demons can be turned into angels and get the best  out of educational, commercial and industrial developments.

What is human health?

Blind so-called modernization of India’s health and education sector has deviated us from our path towards research and treatment. For example, modern medical science defines good health as without diseases.  However, a disease free body is a concept so vast and confusing that it is very difficult for a layman to understand fully what it is all about. For him, a discomfortless body is a healthy body. But this is a total misconception practically.

The clear herbal definition of health is balanced structures of bodily matters and bodily functions with a happy mind and peaceful behavior. According to Charaka Samhita the definition of good health is the balanced position bodily matters, which are Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), Sapta Dhatu (Rasa, Rakta, Mansa, Medha, Asthi, Majja, Shukra), Three Malas (Purish, Mutra, Sweda), and Three Agni (Jatharagni, Antaragni, Dhatwagni), and natural functioning of mind, soul, sense organs (eyes, nose, ear, tongue, skin) and active organs (2 hands, 2 legs and 1 neck).

Herbal constituents of body

The human body has eight major constituents of body. Three are paraphysical matters – mind, mood and ego, and five are physical matters – space, air, fire, water and earth.
The balance of these paraphysical and physical matters on the basis of quantity and quality human body determines its health and behavior.

What is human behavior?

Universally, human action in world is called human behavior. However, modern medical science does not accept it in this form. It defines human behavior as human action under control of knowledge, mind and mood. On the other hand, herbal medicine defines human behavior as human action completely under control of health. For example, you cannot expect best behavior from a starved and thirsty man. Likewise, an inebriated person, no matter however educated and cultured cannot be expected to behave normally. Therein lies the fundamental difference in the definition of human behavior between the two.
Human behavior is based on his diet and environment that defines his health according to Herbal medical science. Modern medical science says that human behavior is dependent on situations and circumstances.

Relation between human health and human behavior

Herbal medicine categorizes human health in seven groups called doshas that come inherently. They are:

1. Vatas
2. Pittas
3. Kaphas
4. Vata-Pittas
5. Kapha-Pittas
6. Vata-Kaphas
7. Tridoshas

Herbal medicine also categorizes mental nature in three groups called gunas. They are:

1. Satavas
2. Rajas
3. Tamas

All type of nature has unique body structures, unique character and unique behavior.

Physical characters under the doshas:

Nature of Kaphas Human: People under this type have heavy and muscular body structures. Their skin is oily and milky fair complexioned. They have good immune system but they are lazy and tend to sleep more. They are not easily affected by diseases or infections.

Nature of Pittas Human: People under this type have balanced body structures. Their skin is smooth with reddish fair complexion. They are prone to frequent hunger pangs and anger. They sweat profusely and their skin is sensitive to heat and light and experience burning sensation when exposed to them. They are normal in their activities and have normal sleep.

Nature of Vatas Human: People under this type have lean body structures where bones are visible prominently. They have dry skin with dark complexion. They have poor physical strength, poor immunity power. They suffer from insomnia and loss of appetite. They are easily affected by diseases and infections and always experience pain in their bodies.

Note: People under the combination of the doshas – Vata-Pittas, Kapha-Pittas, Vata-Kaphas and Vata-Pitta-Kaphas (Tridosha) show mixed characters of their constituent doshas. In these all groups, Trisdosha type is considered the best among all because they show combined balanced character of all doshas.

Mental character under the three gunas:

Nature of Satavas Human: They are bestowed with good memory. They are honest and righteous. They keep balanced and positive thoughts. They think and seek for the well being of others. They are immune to physical, mental and carnal pleasure and stimulation addictions. They keep away from intoxicants. They prefer sweet and mild food like milk, fruits and sweets.

Nature of Rajas Human: They have lower memory in comparison of Satavas human. They are prone to anger and excitement. They are selfish and self-centered. They are very time bound regarding work, rest and sleep. They put a lot of emphasis on the taste and quality of what they eat. They prefer salty and acidic food like spicy dishes, pickles etc.

Nature of Tamas Human: They have poor memory. They are always lazy and sleepy. They possess negative thoughts and hold negative feelings towards others. They indulge in negative activities like theft, forgery, infidelity, etc. They are always gripped by vices like drug addiction, alcoholism etc. Due to their negative nature, they are a burden to the society and self.

As stated before, according to herbal medicine human behavior is directly linked to his health. Therefore, it is imperative to balance one’s health for bringing the best possible behavior out of his personality.

How to balance behavior according to health:

According to herbal medicine environment and diet directly affects thoughts and behavior. And, a person’s thoughts and behavior determines how his health turns out to be. Therefore, behavior and health are directly interlinked to each other. If one changes, the other changes automatically.

In modern times we are witnessing people indulging in unhealthy dietary habits like consuming junk food, excessive non-vegetarian diet and stale food (food that is prepared and preserved for days using methods like refrigeration, putting chemical preservatives etc). In order to have good health the following dietary practices should be followed:

Eat fresh food
Avoid non-vegetarian food as much as possible
Include lots of seasonal fruits and green vegetables in your diet
Avoid salty, acidic and spicy diet
Prefer sweet-toned food like milk, clarified butter, yogurt
Completely avoid narcotics and other stimulants
Avoid binge eating
Avoid alcohol
Maintain a strict meal timetable

Apart from unhealthy dietary habits we are also witnessing people leading unhealthy lifestyle. They do not work or rest timely. There is no balance between work and proper rest and sleep. This also affects good health and behavior in a major way. To bring a balance between work, rest and sleep the following practices should be followed:

If you are young, make sure that you sleep for at least 6-8 hours every day
You should avoid working for more than 10-12 hours at a stretch
Take adequate breaks and rests in-between work. Resting period in a day should be between 5-6 hours.

Living environment also plays a very important role in a person’s health and behavior. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between good living environment and bad living environment because we are too busy with our lives in modern times resulting in overlooking the details. To make sure that you are living in a healthy environment you must do the following:

Make sure you are not living in a polluted atmosphere. It includes your living room, house, locality and area. If you think that your environment is affecting you in negative way immediately change places.
Make sure that you live in a place where there is proper ventilation and enough sunlight.
Make sure that you have adequate supply of fresh water

In case you are affected by any disease or infection, make herbal medicine your first choice of treatment. This is because they do not have adverse side effects and they work evenly irrespective of geographical attributes. Also, they do not develop resistance in the body to the treatment as modern medicines do. Modern medicines on the other hand can have serious and sometimes fatal side effects on the body that also affects your behavior.

A person must act timely on his behavior and health in order to get the best out of his education, research and development. Else, he will be a victim of diseases, stress, and insomnia resulting in negative behavior that will reflect upon his standing in society.
