‘Purification of metals’
BHASMA (Residue after incineration/calcite preparation)
PISHTI (Powdered gem or metal)

Bhasmas and Pishti’s along with herbs are made to treat critical ailments in the form of medicinal preparations.

Steps of Bhasmikaran:

1. SHODHAN (PURIFICATION)
The objective of Shodhan is to remove the impurities. Shodhan can be:

1.    General
2.    Specific

General process:
The sheets of metals are treated red hot and then dipped into liquids like oil, buttermilk, cow’s urine, lime juice or cow milk etc.
And the same procedure is repeated seven times.
Specific process:
The specific process is prescribed when the metal has to be powdered into cow’s milk or any specific drawly for 21 times or even more.

2. MARAN (Killing)
This technique is used to bring the change in chemical form or state of the metal. This property makes the metal lose its original characteristics or physical nature and intensity or regain the therapeutic effects needed for the product.
It can be said that these metals are to be converted into a form that can be easily ingested.
Maran is done in three different forms.
That is in the presence of
1.         Mercury
2.         Plants
3.         Sulphur.

Mercury is the best of them all. It is the one metal that diversifies. The reason could be the excellent property of mercury to amalgamate with many metals.
This process triggers the catalyst action of the medicine.
The plants may be forming complexes in the presence of metals and thus activate the therapeutic action of the metal and herb both.
The sulphur is also supposed to have therapeutic effect as many rivers in India are supposed to be rich in sulphur. And mere bath in such rivers can treat all the skin problems. Such evidence can be the mirror of binding capacity of sulphur. Further research on this can explain the better mechanism.

3. CHALAN (Stirring)
The process of stirring during heating is called Chalan. The stirring is done with specific metal or plant rod. Iron is mostly used for stirring. Plants like neem with antiseptic qualities are good resources to increase the physto constituents to enhance the medicinal properties.

4. DHAVAN (Washing)
In this process the product is given several washes so as to remove the excess amount of agents used in shodhan or Maran. This could give adverse affect on the quality of final product.

5. PUTTAN (ignition heating)
A special device called sharav (It has two parts, each having a shape of soccer) is used. It is used for direct heating of material. The smaller base helps in base and uniform heating and the other part is covered as lid so the metal may not spurt. This is the key process of bhasmi karan.

Types of Putta:

1.            Chandraputta
2.            Dharyarashiputta
3.            Bhugarph putta
4.            Agniputta
6. GALAN (Sift)
The product is then sifted either through a fine cloth or through sieves of suitable mesh to separate bigger particles.
