Arthritis means irritation of the joints. It refers to a chronic sickness process. There are various forms of arthritis. The most common among them are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A degenerative joint disease that is usually common in the older age-group is termed as osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis refers to a severe disease that not only affects the joints of the fingers, wrists, hips, knees and feet, but also harms the muscles, tendons and body tissues.

Symptoms:

The basic symptoms of osteoarthritis include pain and hardness in the joints. This pain frequently increases after work out.
Rheumatoid arthritis develops slowly over several months. It leads to continuing pain and stiffness in one or additional joints, eventually affecting the whole body. The common symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are anaemia, colitis, constipation, and deformed hands and feet. It is also termed as 'cooked food ailment'.

Causes:

The most common causes of arthritis include the following:

The chief cause of osteoarthritis is the structural change in the articular cartilage in the joints, particularly the weight-bearing joints, such as the spine and knees.
The chief cause of rheumatoid arthritis is soreness of the synovium or lining of the joints. It further causes puffiness and thus, irregularity of the joints. Hormonal disparity, physical and emotional stress, infection, cruel fright, shock, and injury are some of the other causes that lead to rheumatoid arthritis.
Heredity may also cause arthritis.
