Dandruff is a bothersome recurring trouble, which everyone wants to hide and get rid of at the earliest. However, much to the discomfort, this problem persists despite numerous remedial measures. Nature offers many herbal and at home remedies for this problem which work as effective means to get rid of the flaky scalp.

Dandruff is actually a condition indicating an unhealthy scalp, which results in shiny, silvery and scaly flakes on the head. The dandruff sticks to the scalp and hair, giving the head a dirty and unclean look as it sticks to the hair while combing and also keeps falling on the shoulders, face and forehead.

Dandruff may also trigger skin and scalp infections which worsen the condition. Frequent combing or scratching is also detrimental and may lead to lumps on the scalp.

Surprisingly, what seems as a superficial skin problem actually stems from a deep rooted physiological unhealth. There could be numerous reasons which might cause dandruff –

  • Unhealthy eating habits and over consumption of junk foods, alcohol or fatty fries and spicy stuff.
  • Constipation and improper bowel routine also leads to dandruff.
  • General lethargy, low energy or constant feeling of tiredness.
  • Perpetual exposure to one or the other infectious disease, weakening the immune system.
  • Emotional upheavals, stress, tension and depression.
  • Too much exposure of the scalp to harsh shampoos and chemicals.
  • Climatic change and onset of winters causing dryness of the scalp and skin in general.

The following are some of the tried and tested, natural remedies for dandruff available in your kitchen:

Fenugreek seeds – these seeds prove to be the most effective ingredients in treating dandruff. It is advised to soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water to be kept overnight. Grind the seeds into a fine paste the next day and apply all over the scalp. Leave it for an hour on the head and later wash with soap-nut (ritha) solution or shikakai.
Lemon – one teaspoon of lemon juice when mixed with a cup if water for a last rinse for head wash, leaves hair shining and healthy. Lemon juice cleanses the scalp and rids it of the extra oiliness and stickiness, keeping it dandruff free.
Green gram powder – wash your hair with two tablespoons of green gram powder two times a week. It is best to mix the powder with two tablespoons of curd, for better application and cleaner scalp
Beet roots – boil beet roots in water and leave it in that water overnight. Massage this water into the scalp every night and see the effect on dandruff.
Snake Gourd – rubbing the juice of snake gourd on the scalp has proven to be an effective remedy for dandruff since ages.
Amla – amla juice mixed with a few drops of lime juice when rubbed on the scalp each night before going to bed also cures the scalp off dandruff.

Dietary changes to help cure dandruff prone heads –

·         Include fresh fruits in your daily diet. However, one must avoid citrus fruits and go in for pulpy, juicy fruits like – mangoes, peaches, pears, pomegranates, papayas, apples, etc.
·         Avoid taking citrus fruits, bananas, dry fruits or canned fruits.
·         Beverages like tea, coffee, alcohol etc should be avoided.
·         Pickles, preserved and spicy foods too should be kept at bay.
·         Eat a balanced and nutritional diet.

Some lifestyle changes –

·         Once the scalp is free of dandruff, the routine of regular brushing should be started to avoid the scalp from accumulating dead cells.
·         Regular brushing enhances blood circulation to the scalp and keeps it healthy. The best way to brush your hair is to bend waist down and throw the hair towards the ground. Then comb from the nape of the neck onwards to the tip of the head, moving further to the tips of the hair.
·         Massage your scalp everyday with your fingertips and with oil every time before washing hair.
·         Sunlight also helps treating dandruff so sit in the sun for a while after washing your hair to get that extra boost.
·         Practice meditation and deep breathing exercises to get rid of stress that may be a major cause of dandruff in the scalp.

With alittle extra care and you will find your hair grow strong and shiny with no traces of dandruff in the scalp.
