Home remedies for dark circles By Ishpreet Bindra

Dark circles, though very common, is one of the most difficult to get rid of. Every time you look at the mirror you find them staring back at you. Those dark, deep depressions around the eyes really dampen your spirit giving you a tired look. But the good news is that with some ‘off the kitchen shelf’ remedies, you can say goodbye to them forever!

While dark circles are a non hormonal problem, most dermatologists face them as the most common complaint almost all the time; in addition to pimples and acne. However, it is very important to understand that dark circles are neither caused by tiredness or late nights, nor are they caused by stress, tension or depression as is the general assumption.

Causes of dark circles

Dark circles have specific reasons for being under our eyes. Some of these reasons are:

Sleep deprivation. You may have late nights, may be rock tired, but nothing would give you dark circles till the time you catch up on those precious eight hours of snoozing. However, if you are not getting enough of sleeping hours you might end up developing dark circles under your eyes.
Hereditary factors. Often people along generations have a strange skin under their eyes, which is either dark by birth or is more prone to dark circles.
Puffiness around the eyes. If you are a heavy drinker or have a tendency of fluid retention, your eyes get that baggy look that casts shadows and is prone to look dark under the lids.
Age related factors. As you start aging, eyes and the area around them shows the most prominent signs. The skin under the eyes becomes wrinkled and thins up. This gives it a dark appearance.

Some kitchen shelf remedies for dark circles

Try the cool cucumber juice. Dip some cotton swabs in the juice and place them on your eyes for 15 minutes. Enjoy the soothing effect.
Potato is excellent natural bleach. Potato slices or cotton swabs dipped in potato juice, when placed on the eyes, lighten the dark circles considerably. Once you rinse off the potato juice, apply a bit of coconut oil or peanut oil under the eyes.
Even chilled water, when dabbed over the eyes for 15 minutes, serves the same purpose.
You may also use cut halves of fresh figs under your eyes. Place them there for 20-30 minutes and then rinse away, applying peanut oil as the final touch.
Almond oil is very good for eyes as well as skin. Gentle application of almond oil under the eyes, before bedtime for a period of two weeks, helps tremendously with dark circles.

Along with these external applications, some lifestyle changes too are needed to get rid of dark circles.

A daily intake of 10 glasses of water is a must.
Deep breathing exercises, like pranayam, enhance the blood circulation and prevent dark circles.
Ensure that you get your required eight hours of sleep everyday at a stretch.
Eat foods rich in water content and Vitamin A.

A consistent use of the above mentioned home remedies and a strict follow-up on the lifestyle changes will certainly help you get rid of those dark circles within no time.
