Home remedies for halitosis By Megha Batra
Halitosis refers to the problem of bad breath. In this condition, an unpleasant odor releases from the oral cavity of a person. Nowadays, it is becoming a common ailment among people. Usually, the bad odor emits out of the mouth, but at times, non-oral parts such as upper and lower respiratory region, the gastrointestinal region, and diseases related to the kidneys may also be a cause of bad breath.

Not only dangerous for mouth, bad breath also leads to social embarrassment.

Causes

The main causes for halitosis include poor dental condition, tooth infections, smoking, diabetes, hiatus hernia and so on. The leftovers of food deposits settled in the tongue or mouth may also cause halitosis.
Conditions of the nose, throat, respiratory tract, or stomach associated with chronic infection or local upsets of any kind are some of the other causes for halitosis. Bad breath may also be caused by gastro-intestinal imbalance, intestinal sloth and frequent constipation.

Symptoms

The basic symptom of bad breath could be noticed by smelling your own breath. Put a handkerchief on your mouth and smell your breath. If it is stinking, you are suffering from bad breath.

Home remedies for halitosis

Among a large number of natural and homemade remedies, following are some of the simple and effective home made remedies for halitosis:

Chew raw green guava. This will help you get rid of the problem of bad breath.
Chew green Cardamom after every meal. This is a definite cure for bad breath as this is considered as a natural mouth freshener.
Another effective and proven remedy for halitosis is parsley. Take two cups of water and boil with some sprigs of chopped parsley. Add 2-3 whole cloves in the mixture. Keep stirring this mixture frequently and cool it. Then strain it and use it as a mouthwash. You can gargle with this liquid several times a day.
Avocado is also a proven remedy for halitosis. This is a valuable cure for treating the problem of bad breath.
Rinsing your mouth with baking soda is also beneficial for reducing the bad breath.

Along with adopting the above remedies, few alterations in your daily diet and lifestyle will also assist you in getting relieved from the problem of halitosis. Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Take a well-balanced diet including seeds, nuts and grains. Avoid dry foods in case you are suffering from constipation.

Take proper care of your teeth. Clean them at least twice a day. Prefer herbal toothpaste. Use tooth pick with caution. Mind it that any damage to the gums will result in bleeding, eventually causing bad breath. Breathe deeply through the mouth several times in a day.

Practicing some Ayurvedic therapies such as Kavala and Gandusha is also good for halitosis.
Select a mouthwash that contains eucalyptol and thymol as they are considered as extremely effective in destroying the bacteria that cause bad breath. Avoid eating foods rich in Sulphur. Examples are dairy, fish, meat, etc.

Eat a raw apple or guava after having lunch everyday. This will help in removing the trapped particles. Using the twigs of the margosa tree as a toothbrush is also a proven method of reducing the problem of bad breath.

Note: Avoid resorting to any of the above remedies in case you are allergic to them. Consult your doctor in such a case.
