Kudzu can be seen growing everywhere in parts of southern United States. Some parts of the plant in India have been used for centuries to treat alcoholism. But in the US, it is considered to be an omnipresent weed.

Some herbal stores in the United States sell extracts of Kudzu. Two problems have been found with respect to this. First, the medicines in these stores do not contain sufficient amount of Kudzu and second, the compound in Kudzu, which is responsible for alcoholism fighting, is not absorbed in the body very well. The Alcoholism Research Time, at University of California, has made a better synthetic compound which has the ability to be absorbed in the body and will be more effective.

This medicine was tested on rats and it was noticed that they drink less. They feel sick after drinking and thus, are hesitant to use it the next time. The problem that arises is that this does not stop the craving to drink as the key to treat alcoholism is to stop the urge.  The cravings are because of a part of the brain which gets activated when one feels pleasure. To cure any addiction one needs to lower dopamine levels in this part of the brain.

The new drug by the team was successful to lower dopamine levels in rats and its effectiveness on people needs to be tested. In the meanwhile, the market is expecting a quality controlled extract of kudzu. The test to reduce consumption of alcohol after taking the medicine was successful but what still needs to be tested is if it will reduce the craving too.

With the answer unclear, if it will attack the roots of alcoholism, one can only expect a herbal medicine in the market.
