The implementation of alternative systems of medicine in AYUSH hospitals and dispensaries has earned the approval of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), but with certain modifications. This announcement, which came on Thursday, ascribed the purpose of this approval to sustenance and mainstreaming of alternate medicine under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).

The intention of this scheme, with a budget of about Rs. 650 crore, is to encompass general as well as specialized Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy in various allopathic hospitals. This approval also foresees the amalgamation of alternative health services with the conventional health system of the nation.

With an inspired vision of revival of traditional systems of medicine at multi-level, grants and aids are also on the anvil for establishment of System Specific Outdoor Therapy Centers in primary health centers and Ayush specialized therapy centers.

Other proposed schemes include establishment of AYUSH wings in district hospitals along with ample stock of indispensable medicines. AYUSH hospitals and dispensaries can also look forward to their up-gradation under these grants and aids.

The government is making an earnest effort to endow supervisory assistance at the Central and State level institutes with AYUSH facilities in tertiary care hospitals, be they government owned or under private management.
