It is really hard to believe that cigarette smoking can be beneficial to us in any way. But in a study report released in the journal Neurology has reported that long time smoking may reduce the risk of Parkinson's Disease. The National Institute of Environmental Health Science has also confirmed the news and advised that even it appears to be true, nobody should start smoking to prevent Parkinson.

The researchers after looking the smoking history of around 3, 00,000 people have found that smokers are less likely to get Parkinson’s disease. The story also revealed some interesting facts that the one, who smoked more i.e. for a long period and not the number of cigarettes he smoked, seemed to have greater protection from the Parkinson's.

Dr. Honglei Chen, a tenure-track investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Science  and also the lead study author explained, “People who smoked more than 40 years had a 46 percent decrease in Parkinson's disease risk, whereas people who smoked between one and nine years had only an 8 percent decrease in risk."

The researchers are yet to identify the active chemicals in cigarettes that help to reduce risk of disease. However they said that when they are able to find out the chemicals, they are planning to develop a medicine which will have the effects of smoking but without the risks of smoking.

Smoking cigarettes actually carries many risks such as heart disease, stroke, lung and many types of cancer. Hence, cigarette smoking should not be advised for the prevention of any disease.
