While the modern medicine market of India is seeing a slowdown in recent times, the spa and traditional Indian medicine market has made a place for itself globally and there are many who come to India to avail the pleasures of these destinations. Looking forward towards Commonwealth Games 2010, India once again is expecting a steep rise in the tourists seeking the spa and alternative therapies.

India is today one of the world’s most popular spa destinations and has over 2300 spas nation wide to play host to both domestic and foreign guests. Most of the famous spas are clustered in the south of India, especially in Kerela and Karnataka. Together all these spas generate over US$ 400 Million annually.

Other than spas, the other major tourist attraction are the alternative therapies, India is famous for. India has around 380,000 registered Ayurvedic medical practitioners. And it is for this very reason that both the spa and Ayurvedic treatment centres are looking forward to the commonwealth games, to be hosted in Delhi next year, to bring in with them a load full of visitors.

Even the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), is expecting a lot of medical tourists from countries like - UK, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, Singapore, Sri Lanka etc.

Keeping the upcoming opportunity in mind the nation is gearing up. Many medical tourism agencies are being trained to act as good links between the visitors and the outlets. Today even colleges and institutes like the ICRI, offer MBA in healthcare management, with specialization in medical tourism.
