As the tourists season is about to begin in Kerela the state tourism department is going all out to attract tourists from world over especially Scandinavia. With a team of seventeen trade representatives like hoteliers, tour operators and tourism officials, this team travelled to Scandinavia to attract tourists and lure them to Kerala this season.

Part of their plan is a 10 day Kerala food festival, some road shows, and a three day exhibition on health, well being and fitness. The fair will also market Ayurveda.

As per the Tourism Department Director M Sivasankar:

"In 2008, the State registered a 103 percent increase in the number of Swedish tourists, while there was a 46.3 percent increase in the number of Danish tourists when compared with the previous year. Finland and Norway also show a potential for growth.  Within Scandinavia, Sweden has the largest share of the outbound travel market in terms of volume and value. Hence, we are keen to develop this market."

The department organised road shows in various cities, from November 2 to 5. It began in Oslo, Norway, and went on to Copenhagen, Denmark and Helsinki, Finland.  These three cities have experienced such a fair for the first time from the Tourism Department.

The reason for choosing the Scandinavians is the fact that they are enthusiastic travellers and like sunny destinations. They also have a keen interest in health. With numerous spas, herbal saloons, Ayurvedic treatments and age old medications, Kerala is known as a herbal destination in addition to being a traveller’s delight. Thus, with all these features, Kerela can prove to be an apt travel destination for them.
