A recent research by academicians at the Southern Cross University, has brought forth evidence substantiating the fact that memory loss can be recovered from with the help of herbal remedies. According to their study, the herb brahmi has proven to be very effective in boosting memory.

Brahmi has been a part of age old Indian systems of medication and has been in use over centuries as an ingredient of Indian traditional medicines, meant to improve memory, brain power, intellect and connectivity.

The researchers at Southern Cross, tested the viability if brahmi as a memory booster, in a controlled environment. They studied 100 healthy Australians over the age of 55 years and conducted validated neuropsychological tests on them.

The researchers found that participants taking 300mg of baccopa monnieri or brahmi extract each day for 12 weeks showed improved memory acquisition and delayed recall skills.

Speaking of the benefits of the findings of this research, lecturer Annette Morgan of the Southern Cross University's School of Health and Human Sciences said,

"For people past middle age experiencing memory difficulties, this herb can help support mental performance. We are facing a dementia epidemic, so the next logical step would be to carry out more trials to see if the same benefits can be shown in people with mild dementia."

The results are clearly very significant for patients suffering from memory loss and may go a long way in treating and preventing dementia. This has so far been the largest study on the herb.

The research has been published and was presented at the International Conference on Herbal Medicine at Tweed Heads.
