The decision to quit smoking is very difficult to take but, at the same time, it is very important. The main substance in a cigarette that one smokes has nicotine which is a very addictive substance and makes the task to quit smoking very difficult. It is very essential for one to know what lies ahead of him when he has taken the decision to get rid of the habit.
The first ten days, when one stops smoking, can be very difficult. A person may suffer from withdrawal symptoms. The most common symptoms which are noticed are those of nausea, headache, flu, stomach disorders etc. One may also feel irritated and depressed. But as time passes all these symptoms subside.
The market now has many useful things like nicotine patches, herbal and non herbal medicines, etc which are helpful for any person who has decided to quit smoking. Apart from these there are other things which, if adhered to, will make the task much easier. First and foremost, one should decide a date to start and stick to it. One should tell the family about the decision as it is their support which will be needed when one feels depressed and irritated. When one has the urge to smoke, eat a chewing gum or use nicotine patches or any other medication. Once can also take up an activity to divert attention. In order to channelize the excess energy one can exercise every day.
One needs to keep oneself busy so that they are exhausted by the end of the day and do not have time to think about the cigarette. The decision to quit smoking is difficult but not impossible. All these small things can help a smoker refute the habit of smoking.
