On the eve of the National Stress Awareness Day, Deborah Grant a renowned herbalist world over, has warned people who resort to stress busting medications and pills that, this might only prove to be a temporary solution, as pills are not helpful in relieving stress for ever.

Grant explained that it is a proven fact that exposure to stress for long periods leads to many ill effects on the body. Stress has a deteriorating effect on the nervous as well as hormonal system and is therefore, the root cause of depression and anxiety and a hidden cause of several other diseases which the body might be suffering from.

She also said that stress is known to hamper the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, pancreatic gland, reproductive system as well as the circulatory system. This may lead to sexual dysfunctions, insomnia, weight gain etc.

As work related stress is on a high these days, many people tend to resort to anti-stress pills to take relief. However, grant warned that this might not be the best solution actually.

Grant said:

“Prescription and over the counter medicines for stress are often designed to treat symptoms of stress but do very little to tackle the underlying cause of that stress. They may provide a brief spell of symptomatic relief and you may feel less anxious or lighter for a while, but ultimately if the underlying issues are not dealt with, the symptoms will only return.”

Speaking of a permanent solution, grant advocated the use of herbal medicines which deal with the root cause of the problem and once that is dealt with, stress and anxiety generally do not return.

Grant explained that herbal medicines usually aim at bringing back the body’s balance of hormones, blood glucose levels, insulin, thyroid and generally strengthening the immune system. Once the body begins to function normally the digestive system also returns to normal and there is a boost in the mood of the patient, who begins to feel energetic.
Herbal medicines sustain the person’s general well being for 10-15 days at a stretch and eventually only maintenance dosage is required occasionally.
