Yogurt acts as the multi-purpose healer By Dharmendra

Yogurt is prepared with the addition of culture of bacteria to milk. The bacteria put away sugar in the milk, and ooze lactic acid that helps curdle the milk. Yogurt has live bacteria or active cultures, along with organisms like Streptococcus thermophilus, Lacto-bacillus acidophilus and Lactobacilluys bulgaricus, called pro-biotics packed with health benefits that shield the body from dangerous bacteria.

Hence, it is better to stock up fresh yogurt in the refrigerator. Though yogurt has a long history of working as a multi-purpose healer, only for the last two decades, it is claimed to have the real benefits of yogurt.

American researchers say that patients, who consumed two servings (250gm yogurt per serving) of live yogurt daily, had 50% chances of being afflicted with antibiotic- related diarrhoea, when likened to non-yogurt eaters.

At the same time, there have been several other studies, which claim that yogurt has the capacity of reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, infant diarrhoea and relieves of food poisoning. It is also proved that the healthy organisms available in yogurt, along with high-fibre diet are capable of preventing diverticulosis.

While a recently-conducted study also came up with the findings that eating yogurt daily helps drop the rate of vaginal infections in women. Plus, its consumption also helps treat infections like itching and burning of thrush.

Finnish-based researchers say the women who consumed at least 3 servings of yogurt and cheese each week had 80% chances of being afflicted with urinary tract infections, while the women consuming yogurt less than once a week, were more prone to contract it.

Researchers in America say if you eat as a minimum of two pots of live yogurt each day, you could be capable of quadrupling gama-interferon levels, a protein, which makes the immune system powerful enough to fight off germs.

Yogurt also acts as the best option for those who have lactose in-tolerance, because it can easily be digested thanks to the organisms available in yogurt.
