According to Siddha, ill-health of any kind in the human body is the result of an imbalance between the three crucial factors that govern its function, namely, vatha or wind, pitta or bile, and kapha or phlegm. Vatha, and pitta are said to work within a ratio of 4:2:1 respectively.
In simpler terms, when this ratio gets altered, a person experiences a disease or he is afflicted by an ailment. Generally, it is believed that factors such as the climate, environment, physical activity, diet, and stress can disturb this ratio.
Yet another important aspect of Siddha medicine is that, in case of illness, the siddha believes in comprehensive and holistic healing of the body, rather than eliminating just the symptoms of the disease.
The medicine form also lays enormous emphasis on the patient’s diet, and in today’s context, towards his lifestyle. In order to enjoy a healthy life, the siddha medicine form has strict rules and regulations to be followed.
Of these regulations, importance is attached to eating healthy or pathya food. Unhealthy or apathya food should be avoided. It is also believed that a single flaw in any part of the food is enough to transform the entire meal into apathya food.
